White Christmas in Sea-town

They say it only happens 7 % of the time and that makes this year special. My delight at waking this Christmas morning to falling flakes and deep white drifts is inestimable. It rivals the unadulterated joy I experienced as a young child - waking to the knowledge that Santa had come. Turning the tree lights on, early this morning, and sitting by the window I saw the bamboo in our back yard bending down to reveal a perfect snow covered Fir behind it. The picture spoke to me like some visual holiday metaphor.

The snow that delights me today has not been without it problems. Isn’t that how it sometimes goes? Special doesn’t mean easy or without challenge. There have been many difficulties related to the unusual weather here in the Pacific Northwest. Everything from fender benders, broken pipes and presents-not-delivered to trucks falling off the overpass and a near tragedy with two tour buses. In the weeks to come I suspect there will be a very technical analysis of how we - The City – handled the last eight days. But in this moment it doesn’t matter, in this moment all I see is the beauty of the unusual offering.

The extra struggles have dared each of us to be more creative in our assumptions about the “shoulds” of this season. It has challenged each of us to bend like bamboo in order to receive the gifts hidden behind. The snow has been a sloppy, silly-white reminder to enjoy the beauty and wonder of this moment. The rare crystalline magic of today is a precious gift, here in rain-land, and I accept it with awe and gratitude. May peace find all of us.
